WHEREAS: Since its founding in Great Britain in 1865, The Salvation Army has brought humanitarian and spiritual help to people throughout the world and continues its compassionate tradition of providing help wherever there is hunger, disease, destitution, and spiritual need; and

WHEREAS: The Salvation Army has been meeting the needs of the people of Arkansas since 1895; and has been providing services to our military men and women since World War I, up to and including the present war in Iraq; and

WHEREAS: Working for the social and physical betterment of our most vulnerable Arkansans, The Salvation Army raises funds through practical, skilled, and cost-effective measures, with those funds supporting social services to meet endemic needs and specific crises both here in Arkansas and across the globe; and

WHEREAS: The Salvation Army in Arkansas provides food, clothing, shelter, disaster relief, emergency rent and utility assistance, mental health referrals, homelessness prevention, summer camp, special events, and Christmas assistance through its Red Kettle and Angel Tree programs to Arkansans in need;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, MIKE BEEBE, Governor of the State of Arkansas, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the laws of the State of Arkansas, do hereby proclaim May 10 through 17, 2009, as


across the State, and I urge all Arkansans to recognize The Salvation Army for its compassionate service to all those in need.

IN TESTIMONY WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Great Seal of the State of Arkansas to be affixed this 30th day of April, in the year of our Lord 2009.
