Governor Asa Hutchinson Announces Appointments to the State Board of Education

LITTLE ROCK – Governor Asa Hutchinson today announced the appointments of Ouida Newton and Fitzgerald Hill to the State Board of Education.

Governor Hutchinson issued the following statement:

“I am pleased to appoint Ouida Newton and Dr. Fitz Hill to the State Board of Education. Mrs. Newton and Dr. Hill bring a great deal of experience to the Board with their extensive background in education. I am confident they will be great additions to the Board. They both care deeply about our public education system and providing the greatest opportunities for our children.”

Ouida Newton, Leola, to the State Board of Education. Mrs. Newton’s term begins on July 1, 2016, and will expire on June 30, 2023. She will be replacing Toyce Newton.

Mrs. Ouida Newton has served as an educator in Arkansas for 37 years. She has taught math at every grade level from grades 6-12, as well as college algebra and college trigonometry for the College of the Ouachitas. Newton served as K-12 Library Media Specialist for the Poyen School District. She has also been involved in curriculum development and data analysis. Newton was named the 2015 Teacher of the Year by the Arkansas Department of Education. Mrs. Newton and her husband, Jerry Newton, have two children and four grandchildren.

Dr. Fitzgerald Hill, Little Rock, to the State Board of Education. Dr. Hill’s term begins on July 1, 2016, and will expire on June 30, 2023. He will be replacing Vicki Saviers.

Dr. Hill has served as President of Arkansas Baptist College since February 2006. Under his leadership, the annual budget has increased from $2 million to nearly $21 million, and total college enrollment has increased from less than 200 students to more than 1,100 students. Prior to his time at Arkansas Baptist College, Dr. Hill was the Head Football Coach at San Jose State University. Dr. Hill also spent 12 years on the Arkansas Razorback Football Coaching Staff, where he served as Assistant Head Coach, Recruiting Coordinator and Receivers Coach. Dr. Hill and his wife, Dr. Cynthia Hill, have three children.
