TO ALL TO WHOM THESE PRESENTS COME – GREETINGS:
WHEREAS: In 1882, two railroads – the St. Louis and Iron Mountain Railroad and the Texas and St. Louis Railroad – pushed into Greene County, and where their tracks crossed, the city took root;
WHEREAS: After its incorporation in 1883, Paragould quickly became a critical trading center in Northeast Arkansas, and as one of the best sources of quality hardwood in the United States, the timber industry took off;
WHEREAS: Junius Marion Futrell, the thirtieth Governor of Arkansas who led Arkansans through the Great Depression in the 1930s, practiced law in Paragould before his appointment to the Second Division of the Second Circuit Court in 1922;
WHEREAS: Known as “The Friendly City,” Paragould is now home to the Arkansas Methodist Medical Center, Crowley’s Ridge College, and Black River Technical College;
WHEREAS: Today, residents and visitors can watch a show at the Collins Theatre, take in the scenery at Crowley’s Ridge State Park, or join in on the annual Loose Caboose Festival downtown;
WHEREAS: Governor Sanders’ “Capital for a Day” program highlights great cities around Arkansas like Paragould and brings senior state government officials into town to meet with their local counterparts; and
WHEREAS: Paragould will serve as the twenty-first “Capital for a Day” under Governor Sanders and will momentarily serve as Arkansas’ seat of government.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, SARAH HUCKABEE SANDERS, Governor of the State of Arkansas, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the laws of the State of Arkansas, do hereby name Paragould, Arkansas, our Capital for a Day on August 12, 2026, and invite our senior state government officials to join me in a visit to the city.
