Gov. Hutchinson Orders Arkansas Flag to Fly at Half-Staff on 15th Anniversary of 9/11 Attacks
LITTLE ROCK – Governor Asa Hutchinson has issued a proclamation ordering the Arkansas State Flag to be flown at half-staff on all public buildings and grounds from dawn until sunset on Sunday, September 11, 2016, as a mark of respect for the victims of the attacks of September 11, 2001 and as an expression of public resolve. Sunday marks the 15th anniversary of those attacks.
In addition, Governor Hutchinson urges all Arkansans to display the U.S. and Arkansas flags at half-staff from their homes and to observe a moment of silence beginning at 7:46 a.m. to honor the innocent Americans and people from around the world who lost their lives as a result of the terrorist attacks that day.
Governor Asa Hutchinson released the following statement:
“It’s hard to believe that 15 years have passed since that tragic September morning. We lost thousands of innocent Americans that day – many of whom were first responders who bravely and selflessly rushed into harm’s way to aid people they’d never met. Those lost will never be forgotten but neither will the determined spirit our country displayed in the days following the attacks. Acts of terror meant to break us failed. Our resolve was clear.
“The country changed forever on September 11, 2001. We faced the greatest degree of adversity in my lifetime and never wavered. Instead, we stood together as one nation with one message for the rest of the world: Terror will never win.
“I invite all Arkansans to join me this Sunday morning at 7:46, wherever you are, for a moment of silence to honor those who lost their lives on 9/11. May we never forget.”
At the time of the 9/11 attacks, Governor Asa Hutchinson served as the Administrator of the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). In the weeks following September 11, 2001, President George W. Bush, in response to the attacks, announced the establishment of the Office of Homeland Security and later appointed Governor Hutchinson as the first Undersecretary of Homeland Security.
