Governor Hutchinson Hosts Roundtable with USDA Secretary Perdue and Arkansas Agricultural Leaders
LITTLE ROCK – Governor Asa Hutchinson hosted a roundtable discussion with U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue, Arkansas Secretary of Agriculture Wes Ward, Attorney General Leslie Rutledge and agricultural leaders from across the state today. Attendees also participated in a Q&A session with Governor Hutchinson and Secretary Perdue. Governor Hutchinson issued the following statement after the event:
"The first time Sonny Perdue visited Arkansas as the secretary of agriculture, he was here to fly over the thousands of acres of farmland that were under water after the devastating storms last spring. Today, I’m thankful that Secretary Perdue was able to visit on a more pleasant mission as he met with some of our leaders in agriculture. Secretary Perdue understands that farming isn’t just a pastime for Arkansans but rather a vital part of who we are as a state.
“We discussed a series of substantive issues with the Secretary today, including the future of NAFTA and the importance of Arkansas’s ability to access North American markets unimpeded by unfair trade barriers. We, as a nation, must be careful not to impair global trade, otherwise there will be tremendous harm to Arkansas agriculture. The Secretary understands those concerns, and I greatly appreciate his commitment to our farmers—here in Arkansas and across the country. Secretary Perdue and his team are always welcome in the Natural State.”
