Arkansas Adult Protective Services Unit Day

TO ALL TO WHOM THESE PRESENTS COME - GREETINGS:
WHEREAS: There are an estimated 2,152,909 adult citizens, ages 18 and over, living in Arkansas. Sadly, some of these adults are found to be in situations or conditions that pose imminent risk of death or serious bodily harm to themselves and lack the capacity to comprehend the nature and consequences of remaining in that situation or condition; and
WHEREAS: The Adult Protective Services Unit (APS) within the Arkansas Division of Aging and Adult Services serves as an advocate for these adults and investigates cases of suspected adult maltreatment; and
WHEREAS: The APS Unit operates a 24-hour, toll-free hotline, which may be used to report a case of suspected adult maltreatment and long-term care facility-resident maltreatment. Last year, 9,005 calls were made to the hotline, with 4,306 being referred for investigation; and
WHEREAS: There are currently 61 employees of the Arkansas Department of Human Services who currently function as part of the APS Unit. These employees have the responsibility of covering all 75 counties in the State to investigate reports of suspected adult maltreatment at all hours of the day or night and under conditions which may at times place them into difficult or dangerous situations; and
WHEREAS: The APS Unit's mission is to improve the quality of life for adults within Arkansas and to protect some of our most vulnerable citizens from abuse, neglect, and exploitation; and
WHEREAS: Staff members of the APS Unit have met to receive additional team training and to celebrate their success as a Unit during the past year, and their work is appreciated by the citizens of the State;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, MIKE BEEBE, Governor of the State of Arkansas, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the laws of the State of Arkansas, do hereby proclaim June 23, 2010, as
ARKANSAS ADULT PROTECTIVE SERVICES UNIT DAY
across the State, and I encourage my fellow citizens to recognize the important contributions the Adult Protective Services Unit makes to improve the quality of life for all Arkansans.
